The quick answer is yes you can. I run a blog called rotogrip.org cause the .com is taken. Rotogrip.org is blowing blog where I talk about bowling and things that I learned from bowling. I think if you can’t get a .com, find another domain with the .com. But I think that getting a .net or a .org is good as well. At this point in time most very good .com domain are taken but I would still try to get one. Rotogrip.com is a bowling website that sells bowling equipment and my site talking about bowling so the ranking should be on the same level.
To be honest, there are some many different domain ext that you can just pick the number that fits your business or site. As long as you can make your domain easy to remember, the . after the name would not harm anything. If you can promote your site, write good long blog post, you can get traffic to your site.
